(BLUFFTON) - In a rematch of area high school powers the last few years, Bluffton fended off an upstart Riverdale squad for a 4-2 home victory. The visiting Falcons scored in the first minute of both halves to set the tone but Bluffton quickly responded each time to control the game. Bluffton improved to 11-0-1 with the win and Riverdale fell to 8-2-1.
After Riverdale scored on a header just seconds into the game, Pirate junior Kaden Basil equalized at the 5' mark. Senior Jonathan Schriner got loose and put Bluffton ahead 2-1 thirteen minutes later. Simon Derstine hammered a rebound shot at the 25' mark to stake Bluffton a 3-1 advantage.
The Falcons scored in the second minute of the second half to cut the lead to 3-2 but they would get no closer, despite a second half of aggressive offensive play. Schriner put the game out of reach with a goal in the 78th minute with his second goal of the match.
Thad Mittendorf assisted on two goals and Schriner and Jude Spallinger each had a helper as well.
The Pirates downed the Falcons in a rain soaked District Final in 2019 on an overtime goal from Jude Spallinger. Previously in the 2019 season the squads battled to a 0-0 tie.
