(BLUFFTON) - Most often times, "paper matchups" don't come true however this was not the case Friday night with Bluffton and Delphos Jefferson in Week 5 of the 2020 football season. Both teams came into the contest allowing an average of 44 points per game and the scoreboard did not disappoint. The Pirates fought through limited numbers (dressed 18 players) due to illness and injury and posted a wild 62-56 victory to move to 2-2 on the season. Bluffton will travel to Paulding for their Week 6 game.
Bluffton opened the game with three scores in less than six minutes and opened a 21-0 lead. The scores all came on big plays: a 55 yard pass from Nate Schaadt to Landyn Fleharty, a 42 yard interception return by Fleharty and a Tyson Shutler run for 37 yards.
At that time the Jefferson offense which runs through quarterback Coby Bailey came alive. Jefferson responded with a score but Bluffton kept on rolling. The Pirates scored on their first five drives of the game and built a 33-16 lead with 7:27 left in the half. Jefferson scored two touchdowns over the final seven minutes, including one as the game expired on a slippery 29 yard run by Bailey. At halftime, Bluffton led 39-32 but the game was, obviously, far from over.
Shutler scored on the first play of the second half on a speedy 63 yard run up the right sideline. The Pirates led 46-32 and were in a good spot but Bailey led a remarkable comeback. Delphos scored three touchdowns in the third quarter on a 47 yard Bailey run followed by back to back touchdown passes to the tight ende covering 16 an 43 yards. as the fourth quarter started, Jefferson held a 56-46 lead.
Schaadt and Shutler hooked up again, this time for 40 yards. Schaadt rolled to his left on a broken down play and floated a pass to Shutler in the flats and the senior did the rest stiff arming a defender and racing up the left sideline. Now trailing 56-54, the Pirate defense stiffened...in fact, Delphos didn't score a point in the fourth quarter. Bluffton took the lead for good with seven minutes left. Schaadt made a great read on a read/option and kept the ball and headed right while the other 21 players on the field headed left. Schaadt quickly covered 40 yards for the go ahead score and a 62-56 lead.
The ending statistics were gaudy: 609 total yards for Bluffton, 505 for Delphos. Schaadt threw for 201 yards and rushed for 214. Shutler rushed for 208 and caught 4 balls for 68 yards. Fleharty added 2 catches for 69 yards in addition to his pick six touchdown. Jackson Wilson had 2 cathces for 47 yards including a 40 yarder.
Paulding defeated Delphos 50-48 early this year and the Panthers give up an average of 42 points per game so another shootout might be in the works Friday night.
