(BLUFFTON) - The last time Bluffton and Ottawa Hills faced off it was in the Regional Finals and the game went all the way to a shootout. Nic Essinger came up big that game and the Pirates advanced onto the State tournament with a win.
The Pirates and Green Bears lined up schedules for a regular season meeting and Bluffton got the better of OH once again, however, this time in regulation. Seniors Simon Derstine and Jonathan Schriner scored in a 2-0 win that may have been worse than the score indicated.
Ottawa Hills controlled the first 10 minutes of the game but Bluffton settled into their ball movement style and stout defense after that with great results following. From the midway point of the first half, the Pirates peppered the Ottawa Hills goal. Derstine blasted a rebound of a Schriner header for the game's first goal. The Pirates had been loudly knocking on the door for the prior ten minutes of game time and finally pushed one into the net.
In a similar fashion, Schriner converted at the 58' mark with a nifty run and finish on the right side. Jude Spallinger, Kaden Basil, Schriner, Derstine and others had repeated great opportunities that came up empty, otherwise, the score would have been much more lopsided. Bluffton put 10 shots on goal (17 shots overall). The visitors had just two shots total and none on goal.
Bluffton, ranked #2 in the most recent state poll, improved to 9-0-2 with the win. Ottawa Hills, ranked #5 in the same Division 3 state poll, suffered their third loss of the season against a difficult schedule.
