Boys Soccer Looks for Continued Success

By

The past two seasons the Bluffton boys soccer team marched their way to the OHSAA Regional Tournament.  Although six seniors graduated from last year’s squad, the cupboard is hardly bare for head man Steve Smucker.

The Pirates return several letterwinners including Luke Young, Dakoda Clymer, Tayton Kleman, Jackson Steinmetz, Matt Daws, Jayden Mays, Simon Derstine, Jesse Montel and Asher Antrim.

The Pirates play an attacking style of play and averaged 3 goals per game last year. Smucker is able to capitalize on his team’s depth using the full roster most games as the Pirates continue to look fresh late in the second half when other teams wear down.

The Pirates have been the only Northwest Conference Champion since the league had enough teams to qualify as a varsity sport four years ago.  In addition to the league slate, the Pirates have challenging matches against Ottawa-Glandorf, Kalida, Van Buren, Riverdale’s, Celina, Bath and Wapakoneta among others.

BHS opens their season Saturday with a home contest against St. Mary’s Memorial at Steinmetz Field.
