Pirates Light Up Thunder

By

(BLUFFTON) - Monclova Christian visited Bluffton for the first time Monday evening for a boys basketball game.  The Pirates quickly dispatched the Thunder by a 63-42 score to improve to 9-10 on the season.  Kaleb Jefferson was one of three Pirates in double figures with Dakota Bricker (13) and Mason Soper (12) joining him.

Terrific shooting allowed Bluffton to build a 22-11 lead after one quarter.  Jared Piercefield, Cole Fruchey and Mason Soper each hit three pointers in the first eight minutes as BHS went 4/6 from outside the arc.  Bluffton shot 9/16 from the field in the opening stanza.

The Pirate offense scored just six points in the second quarter until the final two minutes when another three point barrage took place.  Baylor Garmatter got things going with a ‘3’ from the corner.   Piercefield connected on his second long ball and Mason Soper drained a three pointer with five seconds left in the half as Bluffton took a 37-23 halftime lead.

Jefferson scored 8 of his 14 points in the third quarter, doing work in the paint.  After classmate Bricker opened the quarter with five quick points, Jefferson took over scoring the remainder of Bluffton’s markers.  A Jefferson layup made the score 48-30 but six turnovers in six possessions limited Bluffton’s attack.  Still, Jefferson scored again with just one second on the clock giving BHS a 50-33 lead. The Pirates were able to keep the lead comfortably at twenty points throughout the fourth quarter.  Joel Piercefield, Soper, Jefferson, Garmattter and Bricker all scored.

For the game, Bluffton shot a sterling 65% from two point range and 50% on three pointers.  If not for 16 turnovers, compared to 11 for MCA, the game could’ve gotten out of hand. Monclova was led by Luke Metzger and Caleb Kynard who each scored 11 points.  MCA fell to 14-5 with the loss.
