Bluffton 49 Allen East 30

By

(BLUFFTON) - Sophomore Jared Piercefield poured in 19 points and 4 three pointers as Bluffton pulled away for a 49-30 triumph over Allen East Friday evening.  The Pirate defense forced 21 turnovers and held AE to just two points in the final quarter.

The Pirates never trailed in this one, getting the crowd into it from the opening tipoff with a lob from Kaleb Jefferson to Mason Soper for the game’s opening points on a layup.  Jefferson was on the receiving end of a lob pass in the third quarter but the dunk attempt caromed off the backrim.

Bluffton led by eight early in the third quarter when the Mustangs came roaring back.  AE connected on three pointers on three consecutive trips down the floor to cut the lead to 26-24.  The Pirates answered with seven points of their own with Piercefield scoring in the lane and then bombing a three, followed by a Jefferson jumper.  Dakota Bricker and Mason Ault both scored in the quarter’s final twenty seconds to put Bluffton ahead 37-28.

The youth of the visitors finally revealed itself in the fourth.  Allen East started two freshman and just one senior dotted the roster in postman Grant Whitley. AE turned the ball over five times in the final quarter and shot 1/10 from the field.  BHS was able to use a full court press to force the Mustangs to play faster than they could corral. Bluffton moved the ball freely against the Mustang 2-3 zone and showed improvement as they struggled against a similar zone in the Spencerville game two weeks prior.  Tonight, ball moved well finding weak spots in the short corner and high post and the guards were able to penetrate regularly.

Bluffton is now 7-8 overall  and 3-2 in Northwest Conference play.  The Pirates host Pandora-Gilboa Saturday evening.  The Rockets are 14-1 and garnered votes in the most recent state ranking.
