(BLUFFTON) - Two great girls basketball teams collided Thursday evening in Pirate gymnasium when Columbus Grove came to town.  Both the Bulldogs and the Pirates entered the game with just one conference game.  Before a raucous crowd, the teams did not disappoint as the game went into double overtime before being decided.  In the second extra frame, Columbus Grove limited the Pirates to just four points and wore down the BHS guards through fatigue and fouls and pulled away for a 57-52 victory over the Lady Pirates.

Averey Rumer led all scorers with 20 and was joined in double digits by Alivia Koenig with 14 for Bluffton and Libby Schaadt with 10. Carlee McCluer led Grove with 19 and Lauren Schroeder added 17 for the visitors. Both squads had their chances to triumph.

After falling behind to the tune of 9-2 in the first quarter, Bluffton roared back to tie the game at 14–14. Rumer came up big in the middle two quarters of the game, scoring 16 of her points.  Rumer buried a three pointer at the halftime buzzer to cut Grove’s lead to 22-20.  The junior opened up the second half scoring and gave Bluffton their first lead of the game at 27-26 a minute later. The teams traded baskets like boxers landing punches in the third quarter.  Bluffton outscored Grove 14-13 as the lead changed hands six times in the third stanza alone.

CG jumped out to a 41-34 lead two possessions into the fourth quarter on back to back three pointers from McCluer.  The Pirates cut the lead to 43–41 with 4:30 remaining and held the Bulldogs scoreless the final five minutes of regulation.  Libby Schaadt had a huge fourth quarter with eight points as the Pirates worked against the Grove 2-3 zone.  Koenig stayed dangerous on the outside and Grove paid attention to the sharpshooter’s where abouts at all times opening up the paint.  Still Koenig slipped free for a three pointer in the quarter.  Kayla White dished to Schaadt in the paint for the tying score with 1:15  remaining.  Grove missed a jump shot and Bluffton held the ball for the final 30 seconds but a turnover at the buzzer took away a chance to win it.  A Grove desperation three pointer from 30 feet drew rim but was off mark.

Both teams scored five points in the first overtime.  Schaadt again got loose down low for a bucket and Rumer followed it up with a three pointer to put BHS ahead 48-46 with 1:30 remaining.  Two Columbus Grove free throws tied the game with 38 seconds to go.  Again the Pirates held the ball for the final shot but an off balance Koenig three pointer at the buzzer missed.

In the second overtime, Bluffton took the lead on a Katie Prater long two pointer.  Grove answered with a ‘3’ and then added three separate free throws to build a 54-50 lead.  Koenig scored in the lane to cut the lead to 54-52 with 34 seconds left.  On the ensuing play, Koenig committed her fifth foul and joined backcourt teammate Prater on the sidelines as she had also picked up her fifth foul. CG drained both free throws for a 56-52 lead and a Pirate turnover sealed the Grove victory.

Bluffton fought to the bitter end and held Grove to 0/6 shooting on two point goals in the fourth quarter and overtimes. CG connected on 4/8 three pointers in that time frame.  The Bulldogs also held a superior advantage at the free throw line, connecting on 15/19 shots compared to 9/17 for Bluffton.  While Bluffton won the rebound battle 28-25, Grove turned nine offensive rebounds into eleven second chance points.  Bluffton had two second chance points. Bluffton committed 20 turnovers against the full court pressure of Grove compared to just 10 for the visitors.

The loss drops BHS to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in Northwest Conference play.  Grove, Jefferson and Spencerville are all tied atop the NWC standings with a 4-1 mark.
