(BLUFFTON) - It had been a long time coming so there were no excuses in a low scoring but hard fought Bluffton victory over Spencerville Friday night.  Senior Dakota Bricker scored a game high 17 points including the final five as BHS dug out a 29-27 win.  The win marked the first triumph over the Bearcats since December 2008.

The Pirates downright struggled against the Bearcats 2-3 matchup zone and were only able to put 16 points on the board in the game’s first three quarters.  In the first half alone, Bluffton turned the ball over 13 times and shot just 1/8 from three point land.  Fortunately, the Bearcats were not much better going 0/7 on threes.  The Bearcats owned the glass in the first half, collecting five offensive rebounds for five second chance points.  6’4” Bearcat center Ben Dues led the rebounding effort and scored a team high 10 points.

After a futile third quarter, Spencerville owned a 21-16 lead.  Bricker canned a three pointer with 30 seconds left to bring the Pirates within five.  Coach Todd Boblitt adjusted the Pirate defense in the second half to a matchup zone of their own and the Bearcats could not handle it.  Eight third quarter turnovers limited the visitors to just five field goal attempts and four points.  In the fourth quarter, the Pirates cranked up the pressure as they began to trap in the half court.  SHS gave the ball away six more times in the quarter but more importantly, the Pirate offense roared to life.  After scoring 16 points in three quarters, BHS poured in 13 in the final eight minutes.

Bricker scored the first four points of the quarter and Mason Soper gave Bluffton their first lead since the opening minutes with a steal and layup.  Kaleb Jefferson scored to make it 24-21.  SHS didn’t score a fourth quarter point until 1:25 left in the game.  Leading 24-23, Bricker made a free throw then got a steal at mid court and made a layup while fouled.  The senior calmly sank two free throws with 8 seconds left to push the lead out to four points at 29-25.
