Boys Soccer Back to Regionals

By

(KALIDA) - For the second straight season, Bluffton’s boys soccer team advanced to the Regional tournament.  Bluffton and Kalida were evenly matched throughout the match and the game went through regulation tied, through overtime tied and even through the first round of penalty kicks even.  Finally, in sudden death penalty kicks, freshman Simon Derstine netted his penalty kick and the following Kalida kick sailed over the crossbar and the Pirate faithful erupted.

Senior Braden Conrad put Bluffton ahead 1-0 in the first half off an assist from John Schriner.  Bluffton maintained their advantage until Kalida tied it at the 68’ mark.

Both squads had opportunities through regulation and overtime but neither were able to capitalize. The game went to penalty kicks where each team sent five players to take their shot alternating between teams.

The first two Pirate penalties were not converted but Kalida made their first two to take a 2-0 lead.  Braden Conrad scored his PK and Kalida’s Hamburg scored too as Kalida went up 3-1.  Jordan Siferd made a pressure packed shot.   If Kalida made any further shot, the Wildcats would advance.  But Pirate keeper Dakoda Clymer stopped a shot from Kalida’s Roebke.  Tristan Smucker pulled the Pirates even at 3-3 leaving Kalida’s Grant Laudick to shoot to win it for KHS.  But Laudick’s shot smacked the crossbar and sudden death penalty kicks now took over.

In this setup, each team sends one shooter at a time.  For Bluffton, Simon Derstine drilled his kick putting all the pressure on Carter Moore for Kalida.  Moore’s shot sailed over the crossbar and the game was over.

Bluffton was able to avenge an October loss to Kalida by a 1-0 count.  In that game, the Pirates had more shots on goal and controlled the ball for a majority of the game.

Bluffton will now face Ottawa Hills in the Regional Semifinals Wednesday evening at 6:00 at Findlay’s Elmer Graham Stadium.
