Early Turnovers Knock Out BHS

(SPENCERVILLE) - Two turnovers in the game’s first few minutes turned into a 13-0 lead for Spencerville and the Bearcats rolled to a 33-10 win in week 8 of the 2017 football season.  Bluffton fell to 3-5 with the loss while Spencerville improved to 6-2.  

Bluffton’s defense forced a punt on the game’s opening possession but the punt was fielded and fumbled inside the Pirate five yard line and SHS recovered.  The Bearcats punched into the end zone on the next play.  The Pirates put the ball back on the ground at their own 25 yard line and Spencerville again cashed in after four plays for a 13-0 lead.  

The Pirates quickly responded with a four play, 76 yard drive including a 28 yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Dakota Bricker.  From there, the Bearcat defense shut down the Pirates.  For the remainder of the game, BHS picked up just 122 yards in total.  

Meanwhile, the Bearcat rushing attack was just picking up steam.  The hosts tacked on two more scores in the second quarter to build a 27-7 halftime lead.  For the game, SHS rushed for 351 yards on 44 tries and attempted just 3 passes.  

The Pirates got on the board in the third quarter with a field goal from Kyle Koontz from 23 yards out.  Spencerville closed out the scoring with a 64 yard run by Chris Picker.  

For the game, Spencerville outgained Bluffton 388-198 and enjoyed a 22-8 advantage in first downs.  For Bluffton, Dakota Bricker rushed for 112 yards on 19 carrier.  Kaleb Jefferson added 52 yards on 13 totes and Deandre Nassar 28 yards on 9 carries.  Defensively, Jefferson totaled 8 tackles.  Kaden Renecker axed 5, Hunter Busch 4 and Baylor Garmatter 3.  Spencerville didn’t turn the ball over. 

The Pirates will travel to Ada in week 9.  The Bulldogs are 5-3 and coming off a narrow 22-16 victory over Paulding.
