Boys Soccer Terrific Season Runs to Regionals

Bluffton’s boys soccer team rumbled through the regular season with just three losses and advanced to the OHSAA Regional Tournament for the first time since 2009. BHS finished the season with a record of 16-4. The team also won the Northwest Conference title with an undefeated record in league play. Senior Antony Kingsley was voted the NWC’s Player of the Year by a unanimous vote among league coaches. Kingsley was a strongpoint in the stellar Pirate defense. The ‘D’ had eleven shutouts in 20 games.
Tristan Smucker, Eli Bourassa, Josh Begg and Levi Smith were all named First Team Northwest Conference.
Antony Kingsley and Tristan Smucker were both named First Team Northwest Ohio District. Kinglsey was also named Second Team All Ohio.
Match 20 : Mansfield Christian 2 Bluffton 0 *OHSAA Regional Semifinal (16-4, 5-0 NWC)
(TIFFIN) - Mansfield Christian defeated Bluffton 2-0 on two unique goals to bring the terrific Pirate season to an end. Playing on field turf for the first time this season, Bluffton had their hands full with the experienced and speedy Flame squad.
The first goal of the match came at 11’ when a Pirate defender attempted to clear the ball and it deflected off MC forward Jared Mount back into the goal. The second goal came at the 53’ mark when he found the Pirates well outside the goal and lofted a long shot that found the net.
The Pirates had a good number of their own build ups but could not find the net on the evening.
Match 19 : Bluffton 3 Temple Christian 1 *OHSAA District Final (16-3, 5-0 NWC)
(KALIDA) - While a fast start again put Bluffton in front, a pair of second half Tristan Smucker goals advanced the Pirates to the OHSAA Regional Tournament. Eli Bourassa finished a Luke Young cross just two minutes into the contest for a 1-0 Pirate lead. Bluffton had several build ups through the first half but the Temple Christian defense did a nice job of turning all attempts away to keep the score close. At the 51’ mark, Temple tied the game with a powerful shot from the top of the box.
Temple Christian was whistled for a trip in the penalty box in the 72’. Smucker buried the shot in the corner of the net for a 2-1 lead. Less than a minute later, Trevor Bunch sent the ball across from the baseline and Smucker headed it home to put BHS up 3-1. Bluffton outshot Temple 14-2 on the day.
Match 18 : Bluffton 3 Fort Jennings 2 *OHSAA District Semifinal (15-3, 5-0 NWC)
(KALIDA) - Bluffton went ahead 3-0 in the first half and held on for a 3-2 victory over Fort Jennings. Fort Jennings knocked off Bluffton on the same field to end BHS’ season in 2015. Tristan Smucker got Bluffton off to a terrific start scoring three minutes into the game from a Luke Young assist. Isaiah Schwab added the second goal at 27’ and Antony Kingsley scored a rebound at 34’.
FJ got one back just two minutes later and then added another goal at the 44’ mark on a ball bouncing at the goal line that was ruled over the line and a goal by the officials. While the score was tight the game was not as Bluffton controlled both possession and pace. The Pirates outshot the Musketeers 11-2.
Match 17 : Bluffton 3 Ottoville 0 *OHSAA Sectional Final (14-3, 5-0 NWC)
(BLUFFTON) - The Pirates won their opening game of the OHSAA tournament defeating Ottoville 3-0. Playing in a steady rain, Bluffton scored three goals in the game’s first twenty minutes and then played keep away for the remainder of the game to advance to the District tournament.
Luke Young put Bluffton in the lead at 7’ knocking in a pass from Josh Begg. Isaac Andreas knocked in a rebound four minutes later. Begg scored a strong shot from the top of the box at 18’ to round out the scoring. Bluffton outshot Ottoville 14-1.
Match 16 : Bluffton 4 Allen East 0 (13-3, 5-0 NWC)
(BLUFFTON) - The Pirates wrapped up the Northwest Conference crown with a 4-0 victory over Allen East. BHS went 5-0 in Northwest Conference play and did not give up a goal in any league game.
Braden Conrad and Isaac Andreas scored less than a minute apart putting BHS ahead 2-0 at the 16’ mark. Luke Young and Matt Daws assisted on those tallies. Douglas Nester put Bluffton ahead 3-0 just before half time with Luke Young assisting again. Eli Bourassa wrapped up the scoring in the 66th minute.
Bluffton outshot Allen East 24-0 on the evening.
Match 15 : Bluffton 1 Kalida 0 (12-3, 4-0 NWC)
(KALIDA) - Bluffton picked up a win in one of the area’s toughest home fields, in Kalida. Luke Young buried the Pirate goal at the 25’ mark. Bluffton outshot Kalida 10-2 on the night. The Pirates had three shots hit the post or crossbar.
Match 14 : Bluffton 1 Shawnee 0 (11-3, 4-0 NWC)
(LIMA) - BHS picked up another tight win over a larger school, this time a 1-0 win at Shawnee. Sophomore Isaiah Schwab scored the game’s lone goal at 56’ off a pass from Josh Begg. Bluffton outshot Shawnee 6-3. Keeper Levi Smith had three saves in goal.
Match 13 : Bluffton 4 Spencerville 0 (10-3, 4-0 NWC)
(SPENCERVILLE) - Tristan Smucker had quite a night as he scored a hat trick and assisted on the fourth Pirate goal. Bluffton remained undefeated in conference play and picked up their tenth win of the season. Smucker scored at 8’, 33’ and 78’ marks. Eli Bourassa knocked in the other Pirate goal at 42’ off of a Smucker pass.
Once again the Pirate defense was stout, not allowing a single shot on goal for the match.
Match 12 : Van Buren 1 Bluffton 0 (9-3, 3-0 NWC)
(BLUFFTON) - The Pirates controlled the majority of this match, holding the visiting Black Knights to just two shots however it was Van Buren that scored the game’s lone goal just six minutes into the contest.
Match 11 : Bluffton 2 Ottawa-Glandorf 1 (9-2, 3-0 NWC)
(BLUFFTON) - Trevor Bunch scored an exciting game winning goal with less than two minutes to play propelling Bluffton to a 2-1 victory over visiting Ottawa-Glandorf. Tristan Smucker fired a shot from outside the box that careened off the crossbar. Bunch streaked in and blasted the game winner home, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Smucker had put Bluffton in the lead at the 14’ mark off a perfect cross from Luke Young. Later in the first half, OG was granted a penalty kick which they converted to tie the game at 1-1 until Bunch’s late game heroics.
Bluffton outshot OG 11-3. Pirate keeper Levi Smith made two savs in the win.
Match 10 : Bluffton 5 Ada 0 (8-2, 3-0 NWC)
(BLUFFTON) - BHS remained undefeated in conference play with a shutout of Ada. Luke Young and Douglas Nester scored two minutes apart putting the host Pirates up 2-0 just nine minutes into the contest. Antony Kingsley, Isaac Andreas and Isaiah Schwab added second half goals. Tristan Smucker registered two assists on the evening.
Levi Smith had another quiet night in goal having to make just one save.
Match 9 : Bluffton 2 Riverdale 0 (7-2, 2-0 NWC)
(BLUFFTON) - Eli Bourassa staked BHS to a first half lead and Josh Begg added a security goal with four minutes to go as Bluffton rebounded from their second loss of the season. Bluffton outshot the Falcons 13-1 and Bluffton keeper Levi Smith did not have to make a save. Trevor Bunch assisted on the Begg goal.
Match 8: Celina 1 Bluffton (6-2, 2-0 NWC)
(BLUFFTON - After days of rain, Celina and Bluffton mudded one out at Steinmetz Field. The visiting Bulldogs won the defensive showdown with a first half goal by Jarren Castro. Bluffton outshot Celina 4-3 but was unable to convert any chances. Pirate goalkeeper Levi Smith had two saves in goal.
Match 7 : Bluffton 6 Lincolnview 0 (6-1, 2-0 NWC)
(VAN WERT) - Another balanced attack led to a big win for Bluffton’s boys soccer team. Six different players found the net and the defense held the host Lancers to just one shot on goal in pitching their sixth consecutive shutout.
Trevor Bunch (3’), Douglas Nester (8’) and Eli Bourassa (9’) put BHS ahead 3-0 in the game’s first ten minutes. All three scores were assisted by sophomore Luke Young. Jackson Steinmetz netted the final goal of the first half. Noah Fredritz and Young both scored second half goals.
Match 6 : Bluffton 6 Bath 0 (5-1, 1-0 NWC)
(LIMA) - The Pirates controlled this game from start to finish as they as ran their winning streak to five straight. The Bluffton defense also continued to shine as they allowed no goals for the fifth straight match. Levi Smith had 4 saves in goal. Bluffton outshot the host Wildcats by a 15-5 margin.
Douglas Nester scored twice for Bluffton. Isaac Andreas and Isaiah Schwab worked well together as each scored on an assist from the other. Braden Conrad scored the game’s final mark at 70’. Josh Begg had two assist on a Luke Young strike and also on Nester’s first score.
Match 5 : Bluffton 1 Wapakoneta 0 (4-1, 1-0 NWC)
(BLUFFTON) - Luke Young scored the game’s lone goal 14 minutes into the second half and Bluffton won their fourth consecutive game. Young shot from the right side in a high arc that beat Redskin keeper Ross Burkhart for the score. Wapak had three shots on the night and Pirate keeper Levi Smith made two saves in the win. Bluffton had eight shots on goal.
Match 4 : Bluffton 6 Paulding 0 (3-1, 1-0 NWC)
(BLUFFTON) - Bluffton opened the Northwest conference slate with a 6-0 victory over Paulding. The Pirate defense again allowed zero shots on goal in the match. Josh Begg scored the first of his two goals just three minutes into the match and added a second half goal later. Douglas Nester put BHS ahead 2-0 on a Luke Young assist. Isaiah Schwab scored in the final seconds of the first half on an Isaac Andreas assist. Antony Kingsley headed in an Isaiah Schwab throw in at 68 minutes and Schwab found the net to close out the scoring.
Match 3 : Bluffton 6 Ottoville 0 (2-1, 0-0 NWC)
(ELIDA) - Six different Pirates scored as the team picked up the championship at the Elida Kickoff Classic in a 6-0 win over Ottoville. Luke Young put BHS up just six minutes into the contest on a Trevor Bunch assist. Eli Bourassa and Douglas Nester added goals at the 32’ and 36’ marks staking BHS to a 3-0 lead. Braden Conrad, Tristan Smucker and Isaiah Schwab added second half goals to wrap up the win.
The Pirates had 18 shots on goal and held the Big Green to zero.
Match 2 : Bluffton 8 Delta 0 (1-1, 0-0 NWC)
(ELIDA) - Tristan Smucker scored three goals and Eli Bourassa assisted on three as the Pirates earned their first win of the season in a big 8-0 win over Delta in the semifinals of the Elida Kickoff Tournament. Braden Conrad added two goals and Luke Young, Isaiah Schwab and Douglas Nester each found the net.
BHS outshot the Panthers 23-1 in the victory. Goalkeeper Levi Smith made one save in the win.
Match 1: St Mary’s Memorial 1 Bluffton 0 (0-1, 0-0 NWC)
(BLUFFTON) - St. Mary’s scored off a corner kick with nine minutes remaining in the match to hand Bluffton a 1-0 season opening loss.
