(COLUMBUS) - Bluffton wrestler Blake Sampson finished his career on the podium at the State Meet, garnering a seventh place finish. The senior concluded his final season with a 39-7 record to go along with his placement among the best wrestlers of Ohio.
The weekend didn’t start out ideally for Blake as he dropped his opening match to Tinora’s Derek Smith by pin early in the the third period. This put Sampson into the Consolation Bracket but he quickly rebounded. Later Thursday night, Sampson quickly dispatched Mogadore’s Zack States by pin in just 56 seconds. Another pin Friday morning put Blake in the Consolation semifinals against defending state champion Chance Veller of Delta. Veller earned a 9-7 victory placing Blake in the seventh place match against Elmwood’s Jack Hagemeyer.
Sampson and Hagemeyer are both seniors and had faced each other earlier this season in the finals of the Van Buren Invitational. Blake won that match by pin in less than 30 seconds. This match went substantially longer, but the result was the same. Sampson eked out a 1-0 win on an escape with 15 seconds to go in the match for the victory.
After concluding his high school career with back to back trips to the State Meet and finishing on the podium, Blake said, “It was a very fulfilling season but it just flew by. I was very happy to finish on the podium in Columbus.” Sampson garnered titles throughout the season at Van Buren and the Northwest Conference Meet.
