(TROY) - Senior Blake Sampson is headed back to Columbus for the OHSAA State Wrestling Meet. Sampson will take a 36-5 record for his second consecutive trip to the State Meet. Last year, Blake dropped his opening match before rebounding with a win in the consolation bracket. Sampson was eliminated by eventual fourth place finisher, Blake Cary, from Loudonville.
Sampson rolled through his first three matches at the District Meet, winning two by pin over National Trail’s Dylan Hager and North Union’s Brandon Cox, who entered Districts with a 45-2 mark. In the final, Patrick Henry’s Brandon Bennett bested Sampson at the 7:19 mark. Of Sampson’s five losses on the season, three have come to Bennett at the Thunderbird Holiday Invitational and in the finals of both the Sectional and District Meets. The two could meet again in Columbus but are on opposite sides of the bracket so many matches would have to be won first.
Four additional Pirate wrestlers took to the District mats as well but did not advance to the State Meet. Cole Wilson won his first match 9-4 before falling to eventual class champion Kaleb Romero from Mechanicsburg. In the consolation bracket, the junior Wilson lost 4-0 to Delphos St. John’s Brett Vonderwell. Cole ended his season with a 34-11 record. DeAndre Nassar’s successful freshman campaign came to an end at Districts as well. After defeating Miami East’s Dalton Loughman 5-1, Nassar fell 10-5 to eventual state qualifier Jeffrey Botts of Bethel-Tate. In the consolation bracket, DeAndre picked up a big 18-3 win before falling 5-1 to Troy Christian’s Levi Sims. Nassar ended his season with a 33-10 record.
Sophomore James Badial-Luna went 1-2 in District matches and ended the year at 23-11. Senior Dylan Pletcher also went 1-2 to end his season at 18-9.
