(BLUFFTON) - A great game between two good boys basketball teams came down to the wire Saturday night. Ottawa-Glandorf's Nick Weirauch knocked in a free throw with 0.8 seconds left to give the Titans a 53-52 victory over Bluffton. The loss snapped Bluffton's four game winning streak and moved the Pirate record to 5-3 on the year.
The game was close throughout with neither team holding more than a seven point lead at any point. OG brought their full court, aggressive defense but the Bluffton trio of Bret Rumer, Joel Siefker and Mitchell Ault handled the pressure well. The Titans led 28-21 at the break, finishing the half on an 8-0 run to take the lead. BHS won the third quarter 17-13 to trim the lead to 41-38 heading into the final quarter. The balanced Pirates got 8 points in the paint from Mitchell Ault in the quarter combined with three long balls from Siefker, Rumer and Joe Schriner. The fourth quarter was nothing short of a war as the teams traded big shot for big shot. Rumer drained two three pointers keeping the Pirates in the game. And it was Siefker coming up heroically late, burying a three pointer with 90 seconds left to cut the lead to one before wiggling free on the right sideline for a wide open look that he swished to tie the game at 52-52 with 5.1 seconds left.
The Titans got the ball inbounds to Weirauch and he weaved up court. The Titan guard threw up a desperation shot at the buzzer and was bailed out by a foul call with just 0.8 left. After missing the first free throw, Weirauch made the second for the victory.
Mitchell Ault - 16 points
Joel Siefker - 12 points, 4 threes
Bret Rumer - 11 points, 3 threes
Joe Schriner - 5 points, 1 three
Gabe Denercker - 4 points
Nick Friesen - 4 points
Bluffton will not have time to mourn. Undefeated Lincolnview comes calling Friday with their 10-0 record.
