Maybe that snow day last week wasn’t so bad after all. Lydia Guagenti scored a career high 23 points as the Lady Pirate basketball got just what they needed: A big win. Bluffton routed Spencerville 68-44 Tuesday night in a makeup game from last week, snapping a five game losing skid.   Dennis Lee’s squad improved to 3-8 and will look to improve that record when they visit Allen East on Thursday. But for tonight, the game..and the lane…was wide open for the Pirates and they took full advantage of it.

The Pirates have had some problems dealing with defensive pressure over the season, but that was not the case tonight as Bluffton broke the press and drove to the bucket time and time again. Guagenti was the main culprit, using her athleticism to get into the lane for scores. Mariah Welch scored 8 first half points as well, all in the lane. Sami Harrod and Jaime Lugibihl kept the Bearcats honest in the first half, combining for three 3s. Defensively, the Pirates were stingy as well, blocking four shots and contesting passes. Bluffton led 42-25 at the half.

Nothing let up after intermission. In fact, the intensity picked up a bit. As both teams battled for loose balls and rebounds, things got a bit chippy. At one point the teams picked up offsetting technical fouls even but it was good to see the team play hard and get after it for this big win. BHS extended their lead in the third quarter, winning it 10-4. By the time Sarah Stratton fed Sami Harrod for her fourth and final '3' of the night, the game was out of reach. The final score read 68-44 Bluffton. Jaime Lugibihl finished with 8 points and Taylor Wenger added 6. Molly Lengyel and Sarah Stratton each scored 4.

The Pirates will look to keep up the intensity Thursday night in Lafayette.
